The first step is to get an objective opinion on your potential as a model. Many people may think themselves to be good enough to make it when in reality they don’t have what it takes. Contact an agency and ask the recruiter for their feedback on why they think you do or do not have potential. Then you can determine from there what you can do to improve your chances of being discovered.
Get a portfolio of photos done from a variety of photographers in a variety of poses, clothes and situations. You need to show your versatility and your ability to be whatever the director wants you to be. The danger in getting only one person to do your entire portfolio is that they will have a certain style and then it will be difficult to break free from the stereotype you have put yourself into.
Getting an agent will help to get your name out there and keep you informed of modeling opportunities and photo needs. Make sure you are comfortable with him or her and that they will put you in situations that you want.
Recognize that it will take time to become successful in the modeling business. It is a very competitive industry and there is no shortage of people wanting to become models. It’s important to understand that it is going to take time and effort to “claw” your way into a lucrative career.
Also, in many cases, you need to be willing to travel. Many successful models or those in the acting business have become accustomed to life on the road. Take into account therefore, how important being close to family and friends is since this will be a factor in determining whether these industries are likely to match with your personality.
Another alternative you may want to consider is being a radio personality. While certainly not as glamourous as being a movie star or famous model it can also be a rewarding career. Also, because of the exposure you have in radio, it may provide a stepping stone for you into something bigger.
